About Us
The Nutrition and Dietetics Division is one of the support Divisions of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute under the management of the Ancillary Services Department. The main objective of the division is to produce and serve nutritious, palatable and suitable food to patients, employees and guests in the most sanitary and effective matter and within the financial resources and existing policies of NKTI.
In addition to the routine hospital services of a nutrition and dietetics unit to patients, the division serves meals to employees and guests of various occasions, such as official meetings, scientific conferences and conventions. As part of the institute’s healthcare team, NDD explores and employs a holistic and in-depth approach in patient care and nutrition education. The provision of diet instruction to both in- and out-patients is one of the essential actvities of the division. Furthermore, nutrition education and outreach programs are provided to employees, government and private agencies, other allied health professionals, academe and organizations. Trainings, specifically on renal nutrition are also offered to physicians, dietitians and affiliates in the field of nutrition.
The pursuit to further improve the services is one of the important aspects in nutrition management and this is done through ehancement of menu, continuous quality improvement of work processes, nutrition research and education promotion programs.
The Division is organized into 3 sections:
- Food Production, Supply and Services Section
- Therapeutic / Clinical Section
- Education, Training and Research Section
The specified function of each section:
Food Production Supply and Services Section
This section is in-charge of the over-all menu planning, food preparation, production of meals and food orders served to hospital patients, employees and guests. It is also responsible in the food quality and food cost control management of the supplies and services including equipment requirement and maintenance system of the Division.
Therapeutic / Clinical Section
The section handles the patients and clinical care aspects of the Division. It assesses the nutritional needs of the patients, gives dietary instruction and implements the nutritional care plan for the patients and clients. Together with the Education, Training and Research Section, it coordinates with the medical doctors, nurses and social welfare service divisions concerning patient care, research and training.
Education Training and Research Section
The Education Training Section manages the in-service training of all Nutrition and Dietetics Division employees. It handles the dietetics training program of the doctors, nurses, other paramedical personnel and nutrition student affiliates. It also provides the food service training, conducts and coordinates researches of the Division. Together with the Therapeutic Section it takes charge of the Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Clinic and the participation of the Division to other support groups and community outreach of the institute.
Meal Service
Principles of meal planning, nutrition and diet therapy are translated into meals that are cooked, prepared and served at the NDD main kitchen.
Meals are provided to all in-patients with the following schedule of food delivery:

6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. |
Lunch |
11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon |
Supper |
5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. |
Additional food for the watcher or guest tray maybe requested at an extra cost through the nurse station.
Out-patient may also avail their meals according to prescribed diet from the Division.
Special functions and food catering are also done in the Nutrition and Dietetics Division. Prices vary according to type of menu and food service requests. Catering requests must be coordinated at least ten (10) working days prior to the event with the Food Production Supply and Services Section from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Diet Instruction and Counseling
In-patient and out-patient are given individual diet instruction and counseling based on the prescribed diet.
Diet instruction and counseling is given free of charge to in-patients, while all out-patients referred to the Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Clinic are charged accordingly.
The Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Clinic is open to all patients and employees who are referred by physicians or walk-in clients who seek for diet counseling from a nutritionist-dietitian. The consultation is on a First Come First Served Basis.
Training and Research
Post-graduate volunteer training program on Basic Hospital Dietetics and Renal Nutrition Management is offered to nutritionist-dietitians who want to enhance their knowledge and skills on therapeutic and renal nutrition and hospital foodservice. NDD is also a training-arm thru the internship affiliation program it offers to student of nutrition in colleges and universities.
Training on nutrion and therapeutic diets are also given to the newly hired nursing staff, dietary personnel, as well other allied medical staff.
Periodic in-service lecture programs are provided to all NDD employees in enhancing trifocal human resources development such as skill, knowledge and attitude.
