The Department of Surgery was established back in 1983 alongside the inauguration of the National Kidney Foundation, headed by Dr. Pacifico Yap. At that moment, the department planted its seed which our chairperson carefully and passionately took care of to ensure its growth.

At the turn of the new millennium, the Department of Surgery, under the guidance of and leadership of Dr. Enrique T. Ona became the premier institute in the country providing comprehensive, preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic services for General Surgical and Oncologic surgical diseases.

Further improving upon the best surgical health care team, his successor, Dr. Enrico P. Ragaza, continued in expanding & strengthening the department in multiple specialties, creating and advocating a department that not only caters to General Surgery and Oncologic Surgery but also to other branches of the surgical field including: Gynecology, Ophthalmology (under Asia Pacific Eye Care Specialists or APECS), Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery and ENT. Further bringing the program to the forefront of field of Surgery, Dr. Ragaza did not stop at just expansion of the department. He envisioned a department that not only acquired doctors of caliber but also create them; thus the birth of the Surgery Straight program for Vascular Surgery and Urology wherein aspiring doctors are trained and honed under the wing of the Department of Surgery before graduating them to their respective specialized surgical fields.

In the exigency of quality service and incorporating advances in General Surgery, Dr. Catherine S.C. Teh, a world renowned Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgeon with much skill and experienced acquired from her numerous training in different regions of the world was appointed as the new Chairman of the Department of Surgery last March 2016. Armed with a desire for excellence and fervor for progressive medicine, Dr. Teh is set to again lead the department to the forefront of the surgical field. She also heads the NKTI Liver Center which manages patients with liver problems both surgically and medically.

The NKTI Department of Surgery takes pride in having an up-to-date standard approach in Colorectal, Breast and Hepatobiliary cases as headed by our team of experts and in collaboration with other departments of NKTI, which are collectively involved in patient care, most especially cancer cases. This is evident in the Department’s comprehensive approach to cancer treatment as manifested by the weekly Multidisciplinary Team Conference held by the Department.

Training and Development Program

The basic surgery program in the NKTI is a unique program and first in the country. To provide a competency based basic (2 years) surgical residency training program in preparation for their next level.  In collaboration with the Department of Urology and the Department of Vascular Surgery, we aim to train the residents and produce a well-rounded, ethically bound and quality surgeons who will be the cream of the crop in their chosen field.

Through a series of structured rotations, the program provides training for each resident in basic general surgery clinical and operative skills needed to become a proficient surgeon.  The program will include training in varied fields of general surgery, rotations in specialty outpatient clinics, exposure to different specialty consultants.

Under the general surgery program, the resident is trained in basic surgical skills and gains knowledge and experience in the care of patients in the pre and post operative environment.  The training includes: general surgery, colorectal, vascular and wound, anesthesia, emergency room, surgical intensive care, thoracic surgery, pediatric surgery and out-patient care.

In addition to the clinical aspect, the resident under the supervision of the chairman and training officer of the department will also be involved in academics and didactics in order to foster a lifelong love for learning.

Once the general surgery resident has satisfactorily completed the two year program he/she will be recommended to the Department of Urology or to the Department of Vascular surgery.
