Chronic Kidney Disease V affects some 10,800 Filipinos yearly.  Each year 30,000 to 40,000 CKD V patients need to undergo dialysis.  There were 7,109 CKD V patients recorded at the NKTI in 2007.  Kidney disease often cannot be cured, but fortunately, it can be prevented. Early detection and prevention of kidney failure is vital, as is the need to ensure that acute cases avoid, if possible, the progression to Chronic Kidney Disease V. Prevention and early management, although very extensive can achieve significant benefits for the public. This has generally become a responsibility for the National Kidney and Transplant Institute.

Through the years, the NKTI has reached out to various sectors nationwide and continuously disseminated health information, provided medical services, shared expertise and rendered assistance to better prevent and treat various kidney ailments. Although these measures usually take years of continued reinforcement before the effect becomes evident, the NKTI is encouraged to place these efforts into the clinical and public domain. Every opportunity is seized, every chance is taken.

By virtue of PD 184 declaring June as National Kidney Month in the Philippines, and declaring the NKTI as the lead Hospital in the celebration, NKTI leads the whole nation in celebrating awareness of kidney diseases and their prevention.  With this year’s theme “Bato Kong Alay Bago Mong Buhay”, the celebration will focus on the Kidney Donors whether living or deceased and also their families. Certain activities have been lined-up to highlight the celebration, which will be done in various parts of the country with multi-sectoral involvement.

The nationwide celebration for the whole month of June is made possible by the coordination and collaboration of committed partners in the promotion of health care. Among those who have been the Institution’s advocates are the Department of Health (DOH), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Renal Disease Control Program (REDCOP), Philippine Urological Association (PUA), Philippine Society of Nephrology (PSN), Transplant Society of the Philippines (TSP),  Kidney Foundation of the Philippines (KFP).
