The center is a two-storey warehouse for PD dialysis solutions and accessories. Instruction for Specimen Collection and Transport

PCR Laboratory



Tissue Typing Section

Local 1066 Business Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 

Monday to Friday

  1. HLA-A,B,C, DR typing, Tissue Crossmatching and B27 procedures are done from Monday to Friday. Call Tissue Typing Laboratory (local 1066) for schedule. 
  2. Submission of serum for Cadaver Pool, PRA Screening and PRA Specific is accepted from Monday to Friday, office hours. 
  3. A particular request form for Tissue typing procedures must be filled properly with the patient/donor data and test requested (e.g.HLA-A,B,C,DR typing or tissue crossmatching). Last transfusion date of patient should be indicated in the request form without fail. 
  4. Patient for final tissue crossmatching must be scheduled at the Tissue Typing Laboratory at least 3 working days prior to the scheduled transplant date to allow enough time for further testing in case of inclusive or doubtful results. 
  5. If patient has preformed antibodies, serum sample obtained within the past 48 hours before transplant should be used for final crossmatch, otherwise, serum collected within seven days should be used. 
  6. If patient received blood transfusion, serum sample obtained at least 14 days post sensitization should be used in the final crossmatch.

Instruction for Specimen Collection and Transport

  1. Draw venous blood from Recipient and Donor as specified below: 

    1.a Tissue Typing (HLA-A,B,C,DR) 
    Recipient: 20 ml blood into 2 yellow top tube (ACD) 
    5 ml blood into 1 lavender top tube (EDTA) 
    5 ml blood into 1 red top tube (plain) 
    Donor: 20 ml blood into 2 yellow top tube (ACD) 
    5 ml blood into 1 lavender top tube (EDTA) 

    1.b Tissue Crossmatching 
    Recipient:20 ml blood into 2 yellow top tube (ACD) 
    5 ml blood into 1 red top tube (plain) 
    Donor: 20 ml blood into 2 yellow top tube (AGO) 
    5 ml blood into 1 red top tube (EDTA) 

    1.c Serum storage for Cadaver Pool, PRA Screening, PRA Specific 
    Recipient: 5 ml blood into 1 red top tube 

    1.d B27 
    Patient: 20 cc blood into 2 yellow top tube (ACD) 

  2. Mix yellow top tubes gently by inversion. Do not mix red top tube, allow it to clot and separate the serum from the whole blood, avoiding hemolysis. Label with Recipient's/Donor's name and date drawn. 
  3. Specimen drawn into the yellow top tubes must be kept at room temperature while the separated serum sample must be kept at cold temperature at all times. In transporting the samples, only the serum is placed in a refrigerant or cold pack. Always keep the yellow tubes at room temperature.
  4. The blood specimen should be accompanied by the necessary data, e.g. blood typing (ABO) of Recipient & Donor, relationship of donor to recipient, age, sex requesting doctor, date of last blood transfusion and number of pregnancies. 
  5. Receiving of specimen sample is from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Monday to Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on Fridays. If the specimen arrived after the cut-off time an additional 25% will be charged. Test procedures are done from Monday to Friday and it is by appointment. 
  6. Send blood samples by the fastest method to:

  7. If you have any inquires, please call 924-3601-09 local 1066. 
    If Tissue Typing and Tissue Crossmatching procedures are requested at the same time, blood collected for Tissue typing is enough for the 2 tests. Only an additional 5 ml blood into 1 red top tube from donor is needed.

PCR Laboratory

Local 1057 Business Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 

Monday to Friday  

Specimen collection, Transport and Storage for HCV-RNA (Qualitative), HCV-RNA Viral Load (Quantitative) and HBV-DNA Viral Load (Quantitative).

  • Extract 5 ml blood in EDTA tube.
  • Separate plasma by centrifugation at 1,500 x g for 20 minutes at room temperature within 6 hours post blood collection.
  • Transfer 2 x 500 uL aliquots of plasma into STERILE, screw-cap microcentrifuge tubes or STERILE TUBES (polypropylene).

    Note: Wear New gloves and use NEW and STERILE pipet tips when processing samples.

  • Store plasma at 2-8°C for no longer than 3 days. Beyond that sample should be stored at -80°C.

**Transport the whole blood within 6 hours after blood collection on ice if plasma can not be separated. For samples coming from the provinces, transport plasma on dry ice. 

**It is preferable that patients come personally during office hours, Mondays to Fridays 8am-5pm (if possible) for blood extraction to ensure proper handling of specimen. 

**For patients undergoing hemodialysis, extract blood before the procedure or at least 24 hours after.

Flourescence In Situ Hybridization Section

 Local 1091 Business Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 

Monday to Friday

  1. Submission of samples for HER2/neu, Bladder Cancer, BCR-ABL and PML-RARA are from Mondays to Wednesdays. Cut-off time is 12:OO PM.
  2. For Karyotyping, samples are accepted Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
  3. Results are released after 5-10 working days.
  4. For detailed sample requirements and running schedule call the Laboratory at 924-36-01 local 1091.
  5. Samples should be accompanied by a clinical abstract and request form. For BCR/ABL and PML/RARA samples please include latest CBC result.

Cellular Section

Local 1055 Business Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 

Monday to Friday

General Guidelines

  1. All tests will be done from Monday to Friday. 
    Saturday by Appointment ONLY, with 25% service charge.
  2. Receiving of sample is from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM 
    “No sample shall be received after the 4:00 PM cut-off time.”
  3. Results will be released after 2 working days.
  4. Processing of Bone Marrow Aspirate and Peripheral Blood samples from the patient is performed and charged separately.

Proper Specimen Handling and Collection

  1. BONE MARROW Aspirate – 1-2 ml placed in heparinized tube (green top) and diluted with NSS to 10 ml if using 10 ml tube. If using 3-5 ml tubes, place 1 ml each in 2 tubes, and dilute with NSS to 3 or 5 ml.
  2. Peripheral Blood – 10 ml collected in 2 EDTA tubes (lavender top).
  3. All samples should be stored or transported at room temperature only. 
  4. All samples should be received for processing within 24 hours.

Requirement for Sample Preparation

  1. Clinical Abstract.
  2. Latest CBC result is necessary if sample is bone marrow.
  3. Peripheral Blood and Bone Marrow Aspirate smears.
