    The inauguration of the NKTI-Baxter Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Center of Excellence was held last February 23, 2021 at the NKTI. The center is a two-storey warehouse for PD dialysis solutions and accessories. Facilities include areas for patient training and clinical management as well as a queuing system to make the process of claiming these lifesaving fluids more efficient for PD patients.

BLOOD ASSAYS

Plasma Renin Activity (PRA)

Method: Renin - Immunoradiometric assay (IRMA)

Specimen: Renin- serum

Clinical significance: Renin is an enzyme produced, stored, and secreted in the kidneys; it plays a role in regulation of blood pressure by catalyzing the conversion of angiotensinogen to angiotensin I. Renin works with aldosterone to help balance sodium and potassium levels in the blood test. The test is done to find if elevated renin level is the cause of hypertension.


Aldosterone

Method: Aldosterone- Radioimmunoassay (RIA)

Specimen: Aldosterone-Plasma or serum

Clinical significance: Aldosterone, a steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal glands. Aldosterone serves as the principal regulator of the salt and water balance of the body. This is used to evaluate patients with suspected primary adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease) or those with aldosterone-secreting tumors in the adrenal glands (Conn’s syndrome).


Thyroglobulin

Method: Thyroglobulin - Immunoradiometric assay (IRMA)

Specimen: Thyroglobulin - serum

Release of Results: 1 to 2 working days

Clinical significance: Thyroglobulin is a protein produced by both normal and cancerous thyroid cells. After treatment of thyroid cancer, serum thyroglobulin is useful as a tumor marker for monitoring and routine surveillance.


Anti-Thyroglobulin Ab

Method: Anti-Thyroglobulin- Radioimmunoassay (RIA)

Specimen: Anti-Thyroglobulin- serum

Clinical significance: Anti-Thyroglobulin antibody (anti-Tg) is helpful for diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid disorders. This is also particularly useful in monitoring patients treated for differentiated thyroid cancer. The presence of anti-Tg (which occurs in 15% to 30% of thyroid cancer patients) could result in artifactually high or low Thyroglobulin results.
